I began the family military history as two separate pages, incorrectly assuming the Joho family members would have served in the European Military. The reality is that Joho's have served in both European and United States Military. In fact, it is another reality that like the American Civil War, Joho/Yoho family members actually "faced" each other in battle especially in WWII. I have therefore combined the former two pages (Yoho & Joho) into one.
The Yoho/Joho family has a long history of serving in the military. The earliest undocumented report is that of Johann Michael Joho having served as a soldier in Alsace in early 1700's (Denver Yoho).
Sources to date have shown that American Yoho's have served in the Revolutionary War (5), the War of 1812 (1), The Civil War (25-26), the Spanish American War (2), WWI (6), WWII (112 known to date), Korean War (3), four in Vietnam (one KIA), and two known serving in the Gulf War.
The European Joho Family served in the Napoleonic Wars, War of 1870-1871, and for the German Army in WWI and WWII.
Recent data shows that American Joho's served in WWII and in one case a Joho flew a B-17 that bombed German cities.
I hope that European family members will understand my posting of names of family members serving in WWI and WWII. These brave men fought for their country and should be honored for doing so. It is suspected that most if not all Joho Family members who served in the European Military were descendents of Conrad Joho (1673-1728) who settled in Eberbach Germany in 1700.
This page will change as new information is added. Sources are given when known. New entries for any category and corrections would be appreciated. Please include any known information such as name, rank, unit, time of service, citations, and parents.
Appearing first are family members who served in Specific Wars or Conflicts. This is followed by family members who served at various times not necessarily during a war period.
The five sons of Johannes Joho/Yoho (1712-1795) and Susanna Lau (1713-?) served in the American Revolutionary War. This information is also covered in the menu item "History of Johannes' and Susannas' Children"

As a graduate student at West Virginia University at Morgantown WV from 1967-72, I joined a Civil War reenactment group, the 7th WV Infantry. It wasn't until after I left Morgantown for Lock Haven PA that I discovered Henry Yoho (below) was a member of the original unit! I had participated in a reenactment at Gettysburg in 1972, one hundred and twelve years after Henry was there in the real battle!
If anyone has additional information about any of these individuals or information about any other Yoho who served, please contact me.

Albert Yoho was the son of James Yoho (1838-1912) and Elizabeth Bates (1846-1935). He served in the Army at some time after the Civil War as evidenced by a picture of him and a fellow soldier in Civil War era style uniforms. He may have served in the West during the Indian War Period of the 1880's. This possibility has merit since members of Albert's family moved from Ohio to western states. Some present day descendents live in Kansas. The picture was obtained by James Robert Yoho of Liberal Kansas. Click to see picture (Albert on left) |

HUGH L. YOHO (1936 - ), New Martinsville, WV: Naval ROTC and Officer 1953-1965. Hugh is the son of Glenn Woodrow Yoho and Maxine Roe Parsons.
Frank Joho of Sandhausen Germany (near Heidelberg) reported that he is very interested in military history especially about Yoho's who fought in the American Civil War. Frank is a member of a German Civil War Reenactment group, the 7th Georgia Cav. He has participated in reenactments in Europe.
EDITORS NOTE: .Considering all information shows that Yoho's were members of Northern units during the American Civil War, It seems that Frank Joho has chosen the wrong side to represent the Joho's in Europe!
