The Sun Sets On Okinawa

The sun sets over the East China Sea as viewed from Headquarters Company 14th PsyWar Battalion on Okinawa 1963. I left the Rock in April of that year aboard the troop ship USS JC Breckenridge.. My new temporary assignment was Ft. Gordon Ga where I stayed until my discharge in Sept. of that year to return to college.

Any vague thoughts of reenlisting were stripped from my mind as a result of the 22 days of Hell spent on that troop ship.. We were literally treated like caged animals.. I have never understood how the Army could expect anyone to have any elan or esprit de corps for the service after such an unnecessary ordeal.. I was overjoyed to see the Golden Gate Bridge emerge through the fog at the end of that terrible voyage......

Fortunately I carry mostly good memories of my experiences in Asia, but like the sun in the picture, those memories are fading..... This page has helped me to rekindle some of those memories and hopefully will help to fill a void about the history of the 14th PsyWar Battalion.........
